Breast Milk Bank For Babies To Open In South Africa

A breast milk bank for orphaned children and infants born from mothers suffering from chronic illnesses is now in operation at the Mankweng hospital in Limpopo.

The breast milk bank aims to encourage healthy mothers to donate their breast milk, which will be used to provide for other babies who cannot be breastfed by their mothers.

Head nutritionist at the provincial Health Department, Daddy Mathews says the milk will be beneficial to sick babies.

The breast milk bank that is in Mankweng is in full operation.

“The breast milk bank will be in operation for babies that are orphans and also for babies that have got what we call narcotising enterocolitis.”

“This meaning that these children are unable to breast feed and they will need to have the support of the mothers that are coming to donate their milk.”
