Coronation Street legend Liz Dawn, best known for playing the iconic Vera Duckworth, has died aged 77, it has been confirmed by her family.
A statement said: ‘We are devastated and heartbroken at the passing of our much-loved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, the incredible Liz Dawn. Liz died peacefully last night at home with her loving family around her.
‘She has been the love, light and inspiration in our lives and we are bereft at her passing.’
Liz, whose real name is Sylvia Butterfield MBE, was born on 8th November 1939. She joined Corrie in 1974 and was a recurring character for some time before her husband Jack was introduced.
Jack and Vera became one of the most iconic couples ever to walk the cobbles, with the nation taking them to their hearts and their constant bickering but inimitable warmth making them so very Corrie.
Bill Tarmey, who played Jack, passed away in 2012. At the time of his death, Liz said: ‘Bill was my best friend and I loved him dearly. I will never meet anybody so kind and generous. He had the heart of a lion and I miss him terribly.’
Due to complications with her emphysema, Liz asked to be written out of the show and Vera passed away in emotional scenes in January 2008. Liz reprised her role in 2010 for Jack’s death scene as the couple shared a final dance together.
A Coronation Street statement read: ‘It is with the greatest sadness that we have learned our beloved Liz Dawn has passed away last night. Her family at Coronation Street are heartbroken.
‘We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy at this very sad time to Liz’s devoted husband Don, her loving children Graham, Dawn, Ann and Julie, their families and her six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
‘We have been blessed to have Liz in our lives, as she was such a kind, considerate and caring friend and colleague. As Coronation Street’s Vera Duckworth for 34 years, Liz brought so much joy and happiness to so many. She was a wonderful actress who will forever be a true Coronation Street legend.
Coronation Street’s executive producer Kieron Roberts added: ‘Liz Dawn was a true Coronation Street legend, a brilliant actor and a wonderful person. Everyone lucky enough to have worked with Liz during her thirty-four years playing Corrie icon Vera Duckworth will remember her with huge affection.’
More recently, Liz made a one off appearance in Emmerdale as a tricky Christmas Day customer of Eric Pollard’s B&B.
She is survived by her husband Donald Ibberston and four children.
