After causing absolute pandemonium in New York City this past weekend, one can only hope that Kanye West is off blissfully celebrating his 39th birthday today. It’s been a big year for Yeezy, who released his seventh studio album The Life of Pablo to great critical acclaim this past February. He once again proved he is a master of thinking outside of the box, hosting an over the top fashion-show-slash-listening-release-party-spectacular in Madison Square Garden to celebrate, and then seeking to change the format of album releases as we know them, continuing to iterate on his album after it had already hit the (Tidal) stands.
But let’s not forget the fantastic adventure it has been to follow the artist on Twitter TWTR -0.33%. From random musings, to unintelligible rants – we’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve dropped our jaws, but most importantly we’ve tweeted, retweeted, and mentioned. This is the life of Kanye on Twitter.
’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, West doesn’t actually need to tweet for us to follow him with baited breath, but this year Yeezy has been fairly open to sharing his thoughts freely in 140 characters or less, and users have been lapping it up.
The biggest spike he saw all year followed his acceptance speech for the Video Vanguard Award at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards last August. After a familiar lengthy ramble, he concluded with the announcement of his presidential candidacy and the internet went ballistic. The combined number of mentions for his official handle and the name “kanye,” totaled close to 6 million.
Happy birthday to you Mr. West.
