Mariah Carey has given her New Year a good start.
The singer returned to Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve a year after a disastrous performance that was plagued with technical issues and a pitchy performance, which saw her eventually storm off stage.
But Mariah Carey rang in 2018 with a hugely successful performance – even if she was left without the hot tea she’d requested.
Appearing in a stunning nude bodysuit with ginormous furry coat in New York’s Times Square – strikingly similar to the outfit she wore at last year’s performance – she thrilled the crowds by opening with a rendition of 1990 hit Vision Of Love.
She followed with a powerful performance of Hero, which she dedicated to the people ‘who make this a better place, a more united planet’.
But she couldn’t resist a diva moment, as she joked she’d been left without the hot tea she’d been promised.
‘I’m just going to take a sip of tea if they’ll let me. They told me there would be tea,’ she said, but no one appeared with said beverage.
‘Ugh. It’s a disaster,’ she continued. ‘OK, well, we’ll just have to rough it. I’m going to be just like everybody else with no hot tea.’
She unwittingly then became the first meme of the year, with fans rushing to Twitter to make light of the situation.
Mariah later responded in typical Mariah fashion, with her drinking a cuppa and telling the world: ‘Found my tea!’
‘Happy New Year! I love you!,’ she said after her performance as she blew a kiss to the audience, then later told Ryan Seacrest: ‘I’m feeling better than last year.’
Not surprising, given that last year’s performance resulted in her storming off stage.
During the disastrous gig she failed to hide the fact she was lip syncing as her timing with the backing track was off, revealing she was merely mouthing the words.
At one point she moaned to the crowd: ‘I wanted a holiday too. Can’t I just have one?’
As her third song Emotions started, Mariah addressed the fact she was mining by confessing: ‘Alright, we didn’t have a check for this song… we’re missing some of the vocals… it went to Number One, and that’s what it is.’
Mariah then only managed to sing three words before giving up and saying: ‘Let the audience sing.’
Then, at around 20 to midnight, she stormed off stage.
