You may have seen them in the headlines before (they’re nothing new), but bites are on the rise in America.
Lone Star ticks can carry a sugar molecule called Alpha-Gal. They get it from feasting on the blood of mammals.
If a tick carrying Alpha-Gal bites you, your body will produce antibodies to fight the molecule. It essentially messes with your immune system and restructures it to attack something that usually enters our body en masse.
Many people who are bitten by the Lone Star tick don’t realise they have the reaction until they eat meat, which contains Alpha-Gal.
