Neymar has become the most expensive player in history after Paris St Germain completed his £199million transfer from Barcelona.
The Brazilian has been at the centre of the most remarkable transfer saga in history for the last few weeks.
It emerged that he was keen on a move away from the Nou Camp, apparently wanting to escape Lionel Messi’s shadow, and PSG were ready to pay his astronomical 222m euros release clause.
The deal is now over the line with the Ligue 1 side confirming the deal had gone through.
Neymar said following the move: ‘I am extremely happy to join Paris Saint-Germain.
‘Since I arrived in Europe, the club has always been one of the most competitive and most ambitious. And the biggest challenge, what most motivated me to join my new teammates is to help the club to conquer the titles that their fans want.
‘Paris Saint-Germain’s ambition attracted me to the club, along with the passion and the energy this brings. I played 4 seasons in Europe and I feel ready to take the challenge. From today, I will do everything I can to help my new team-mates, to open up new horizons for my club and to bring happiness to its millions of supporters around the world.’
Earlier in the day Barcelona confirmed that his release clause had been paid after the 25-year-old’s representatives visited Barcelona’s offices to pay the player’s termination clause.
A statement from Barcelona read: ‘On Thursday afternoon Neymar Jr’s legal representatives visited in person the Club’s offices and made the payment of 222 million euros in the player’s name with regards to the unilateral termination of the contract that united both parties.
‘As such, the Club will pass on to UEFA the details of the above operation so that they can determine the disciplinary responsibilities that may arise from this case.’
Both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez paid tribute to Neymar ahead of his world-record move to the French club after he was given permission to skip Barcelona training on Wednesday.
Neymar’s five-year deal is reportedly worth €30m (£27m) net per year, which is close to €600,000 (£540,000) per week after tax.
It’s expected that Neymar will be officially unveiled as a PSG player tomorrow.
