A man and his girlfriend who were trapped inside the London tower that got engulfed with flames, made frantic phone calls to loved ones.
Gloria Trevisan and Marco Gottardi were trapped in the tower
Heartbreaking details of the last phone calls of an Italian couple to their families have been revealed, Daily Star UK reports.
Gloria Trevisan and Marco Gottardi, who were engaged to be married, were on the 23rd floor of Grenfell Tower.
The North Kensington tower block was engulfed in a blaze in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
A total of 17 have been confirmed dead but this number is expected to rise.
The Italian couple, both architecture graduates who moved to London just three months ago, were on the phone separately to their parents.
This comes as other final messages of people caught in the fire were revealed.
Gloria told her mum: “Thank you for what you have done for me.”
She called her family at 3am saying a fire had broken out and she and her fiance were waiting for help.
Her dad told Italian newspaper Il Mattino di Padova: “They wanted to go down but said they could see flames going up the stairs and the smoke was more and more intense.”
Moments after she rang the phone line cut out.
Her dad said he made hundreds of calls to his daughter after that but he couldn’t get through.
Marco called his family at 3.45am and attempted to play down his fears.
His dad Giannino told the same paper: “In the first call Marco told us not to worry, that everything was under control, that basically we must not worry.
“He was trying to minimise what happened, probably not to unsettle us.
“But in the second call – and I can’t get this out of my head – he said there was smoke, that so much smoke was rising.
“We were on the phone until the last moment … At 4.07am he told us their apartment was flooded with smoke and that the situation had become an emergency.
“The communications broke down and from that moment on we no longer had any contact. The phone didn’t pick up again.”
