There’s nothing quite like Google. It could be 3am, you’re lying awake, unable to sleep because you can’t remember which member of Too Cool did the worm – Grand Master Sexay or Scotty 2 Hotty – but the world’s biggest search engine will put your mind at rest.
Even if you’ve got a song stuck in your head, one that you don’t know the name of, you can type about two words from it into Google and it’ll somehow work out what it is.
It does have its downsides, mind. Have you ever got a sudden pain, or been ill in some way, so you search the symptoms? Awful, isn’t it. After a brief check you conclude that you’ve been bitten by a tick, have had a stroke and your stool is the wrong colour.
Because we use it so much, there’s now a site dedicated to the things we ‘How To’. The website, designed by Xaquin G.V, an interactive visual data journalist who worked with Google, shows the most things searched for that begin with “how to.”
Now, with some things, like “how to de-bone a chicken,” or something equally niche, you’d sort of think yeah, okay, that’s not common knowledge. However with others it’s a bit like wow, what would you people do without the internet.
So, without further ado, here are the top ten:
1. how to tie a tie
2. how to kiss
3. how to get pregnant
4. how to lose weight
5. how to draw
6. how to make money
7. how to make pancakes
8. how to write a cover letter
9. how to make french toast
10. how to lose belly fat
“How to make money” and “how to get pregnant” being in the same list is rather funny, as anyone will know that the too aren’t usually mutually exclusive.
The last four seem like acceptable questions, to be honest. However, if you’re searching for kissing and getting pregnant, there’s a plethora of other search engines that will give you visual examples.
Google’s data editor Simon Rogers explained to the Telegraph: “Recently, we noticed that ‘how to…’ searches have increased by more than 140% since 2004, and much of that search interest is directed towards how to ‘fix’ things – whether it’s a lightbulb, window, washing machine, or even the toilet.”
On that note, I think it’s time we had a laugh. So, what was the last thing you searched how to do on Google? Mine was: “How to get out of the dog house,” and I’ve been doing housework for days with minimal success.
