A New Zealand woman gives birth to the heaviest baby the world has ever seen in a long time. The baby weighs 16 pounds 4 ounces (7.39kg).
The baby boy measured 57cm in length, close to double the size of the average newborn.
His parents, who chose to remain anonymous, said their son was healthy and happy.
He was delivered by caesarean at Wellington Hospital. It took hospital staff several hours to successfully administer an epidural as, with her huge baby bump, the mother had had trouble leaning over.
In May 2016 a 19-year-old woman in India gave birth to a 15-pound baby girl.
Dr Venkatesh Raju, the local health officer, said: “In my 25 years of experience, I had never seen such a big baby.
“She is a miracle. I believe she is not only the heaviest baby born in India but the heaviest baby girl ever born in the world.”
