Twenty-six-year old Julia Monaco says she was out shopping with friends in the Spanish capital when the van crashed into crowds of tourists, 9News Aus reports.

Fourteen people have now died following the attack, with more than 100 others injured.

Julia, from Melbourne, told Australian radio station 3AW this was her third experience since she began travelling around Europe.

She had been on the Tube in London at the time of the London Bridge attack in June and was at Notre Dame in the same month in Paris when a police man was stabbed.

She told the hosts of the ‘absolute pandemonium’ that took place following yesterday’s attack in Barcelona, when dozens of tourists took cover in shops.

She said on 9News: “We didn’t see the van. We could just see the crowds and the police and some people who had clearly seen something terrible happen.

“We were looking at about 200 people crowded out in the square … suddenly everyone outside just started screaming and everyone turned at the same time.

“People were literally pushing to get into the store off the street … we were genuinely terrified.

“It was genuinely like they were running for their lives, it was genuine fear you could see, more than just panic.”

Julia, who was with her friends, was hiding in a shop, where they were told to stay ‘as low as possible and away from the windows’.

“There was a lot of screaming, a lot of crying,” she added.

Despite her brushes with death, Julia is determined not to cut her trip short.

She went on: “You just have to keep going. I’m sure, though, tomorrow morning my mum will say ‘come home’, but I don’t think I’ve been scared out of travelling.”
