Woman Who ‘Won £34 Million’ Sues Casino After Being Offered Steak Dinner Instead

Picture this: you’re sitting on a poker machine, trying line up a few of the rows and then all the bells and whistles start going off and it says that you’ve just won $42.9 million (£34 million). You’d probably struggle to contain your excitement and start ordering drinks for everyone at the casino, right?

Well, Katrina Bookman was in that very scenario and couldn’t believe her eyes.

Security at the Resorts World Casino, in New York, allegedly asked her to come back the next day for a decision on her earnings.

When she arrived the following day, she was told that she wasn’t going to be taking home millions and millions of dollars. She was told that the machine had malfunctioned and she was entitled to $2.25 (£1.70) which was her winnings before the jackpot malfunction.

As a courtesy, the casino said it would throw in a steak dinner as well. Because, you know, they were being generous.

Katrina told ABC7: “I kept thinking about my family. The struggle I’ve been through, it’s hard to cope.” The mum-of-four was raised in foster care before putting all her kids through school while she was single.”

Resorts World spokesman, Dan Bank, told CNN: “Casino personnel were able to determine that the figure displayed on the penny slot was the result of an obvious malfunction – a fact later confirmed by the New York State Gaming Commission.”

She’s not going down without a fight, however, and has hired lawyer Alan Ripka to see whether the casino can refuse to pay due to the malfunction.

He told ABC7: “They win and the house doesn’t want to pay out. To me that’s unfair. The machine takes your money when you lose. It ought to pay it when you win.”

Katrina is now suing the casino for the full amount of her ‘malfunctioned’ win, but Mr Ripka says she is at least entitled to the maximum allowed on the machine, which is $6,500 (£5,086).
