Up to 5,000 Indians have trooped into the city of Hyderabad to swallow live fish covered in yellow paste believed to cure asthma. The bizarre treatment is administered every year in June to asthma patients who believe that it will help them breathe more easily. Members of the Bathini Goud family administer the unusual treatment, which involves slipping the 5cm fish down the throats of patients.

The Bathini Goud family claims the treatment is based on a secret formula, which it further claims a Hindu saint handed down to them in 1845. The thousands of patients gather in the city for two days on dates determined by the monsoon season. The family issues the treatment free of charge. Patients are then instructed to observe a strict diet for 45 days after swallowing the fish. However, the effectiveness of the strange dosage has not been medically proven.
