Jose Mourinho has identified Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal as his next major transfer target at Manchester United, reports say.

January was a relatively subdued month for the Red Devils, as they signed Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal as their only piece of business of the winter window.

But, with United failing to keep up with rampant league leaders Manchester City, Mourinho is believed to be ready to oversee a spending spree this summer.

One area that Mourinho is keen to strengthen is his engine room as Michael Carrick, having spent over a decade at Old Trafford, is set to leave and Marouane Fellaini could also be on his way out.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Mourinho will instruct United to target Chile superstar Vidal in the summer as he seeks to bolster his options in midfield.

Mourinho splashed out a then world-record sum of £89m on Paul Pogba in 2016 and also spent £40m to sign Nemanja Matic from Chelsea last summer.

But United have struggled this season when Pogba has been out of the team and Matic, at 29, has already played over 30 games during the 2017-18 campaign.

Vidal has been a key player for Bayern since signing from Juventus in 2015 but his current contract is set to expire next year.

United, who are second in the Premier League, have also been linked with Borussia Dortmund stars Julian Weigl and Christian Pulisic.

After Wednesday’s disappointing defeat to Tottenham at Wembley, Mourinho’s side will hope to bounce back at home to Huddersfield Town this weekend.

Antonio Conte, the Chelsea manager, has also openly praised Vidal and said he has ‘great respect’ for the player he worked with at Juventus.

‘I must be honest, it’s not right to talk about a player of another team. Especially if you try to link this player with us,’ the former Italy boss said.

‘But Arturo is a fantastic player, I have a great respect for Arturo, and we spent many years in Juventus together. If we go to war, I’d always want him with me.’
