Many pundits were predicting Conor McGregor would get absolutely pummelled in his highly anticipated fight with Floyd Mayweather. Some were saying his MMA style wouldn’t fit with boxing, while others thought Mayweather would knock him out after a few rounds.
However, many were impressed that the Irishman managed to last 10 rounds before the bout was stopped by referee Robert Byrd. It seems as though one of those people is Mike Tyson.
Before last weekend’s match, Tyson told the Pardon My Take podcast that McGregor was ‘going to get killed’, adding: “[McGregor] put his dumb ass in a position where he’s gonna get knocked out because [Mayweather has] been doing this all his life since he was a baby. [McGregor] can’t kick and grab and stuff…He’s not going to stand much of a chance.”
But after being among the tens of thousands of people who were in T-Mobile Arena that night, he’s certainly been proven wrong. Appearing on SiriusXM Rush, he delivered this review of McGregor: “I think he did great. Oh man, he got an A. He did great…A guy that never did that before and he went 10 rounds.”
Tyson also agreed that the fight was stopped a bit too early, but encouraged the Irishman to continue boxing if he wanted: “I would say go back to the UFC but if you get paid more money boxing, I would box.”
McGregor’s next bout could come sooner rather than later.
Former IBF Junior Welterweight and WBA Welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi has offered to fight The Notorious under a set of conditions. He’s told MMA Hour: “I’m all about it, man. I tell you, I’ll make it winner takes all. I’m willing to risk fighting him for free just to punch him in the mouth again and again and again. That’s how confident I am they can’t beat me.
“I would make it winner takes all just for the pleasure of sinking my fist back into his teeth again. That’s how confident I am.
“You have to keep in mind that Joe [Cortez] is talking about how competitive sparring was. This was me at about 35-40 percent. Conor gets stopped by me. If Conor doesn’t get stopped by me – and I’m a guy who doesn’t get a lot of stoppages – I should get penalised at least a portion of my purse just for not stopping the guy.”
Malignaggi was drafted into the McGregor camp to help him get ready for his fight against Mayweather, but their relationship quickly soured and he was only used for two sessions. They had a heated confrontation just days before the big fight, where Paulie told McGregor to ‘bring his balls’, and by all reviews, the Irishman did.
It would be pretty interesting to see how those two would perform in a ring together.
