Viewers of this evening’s clash between Liverpool and Manchester City have taken to social media in their numbers to discuss the Reds ending City’s unbeaten run in nail-biting fashion.

The two sides went head-to-head at Anfield, with both looking to continue stellar recent runs of form.

Hosts Liverpool came into proceedings on the back of a hugely-impressive 17-match unbeaten streak across all competitions, including victories in their last 4 outings.

Manchester City, meanwhile, had not lost a Premier League game all season, culminating in a massive 15-point lead atop the English top-flight table.

Despite Liverpool’s sensational home form to this point in the campaign, visitors Manchester City were nevertheless viewed as favourites heading into the clash, with the absence of Virgil Van Dijk and the recent departure of Philippe Coutinho for the Reds an interesting side-note.

However, it was the hosts who came out of the blocks on top, putting City on the back foot and making use of the energy generated by the raucous Anfield crowd to their advantage.

Their efforts didn’t take long to pay off, as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain drove from his midfield berth into the heart of the Citizens’ defence, before unleashing a pinpoint driven strike into the bottom left-hand corner of Ederson’s net.

City were soon back on terms, though, as a spell of dominance from the away side eventually saw Leroy Sane burst past Joe Gomez and unleash a powerful drive past the despairing Loris Karius from a tight angle, with the Reds’ shot-stopper once again failing to cover himself in glory.

The visitors came out for the second 45 looking as though they had taken control of proceedings, with Kevin De Bruyne increasingly influential.

However, an absolutely scintillating 9-minute spell on the part of the hosts saw City shellshocked, with goals from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah blowing Guardiola’s men out of the water.

The first, on the stroke of the hour mark, saw Roberto Firmino shrug the disappointing John Stones off the ball too easily, before the Brazilian lifted a wonderful chipped effort past the onrushing Ederson and in off the back post.

The second came just two minutes later, as City’s back 4 continued to look completely out of sorts, with Sadio Mane eventually driving a wonderful left-footed effort into the top left-hand corner following a Mohamed Salah layoff.

And Liverpool’s 4th on the day came via star man Mohamed Salah, who picked off a poor clearance from Ederson 40 yards out with a perfect first-touch, before lifting a sumptuous chipped effort over the back-peddling Brazilian.

Hearts in mouths

However, in typical Liverpool fashion, the Reds allowed City back into things, with Bernardo Silva pulling one back in the 84th-minute, before Ilkay Gundogan incredibly made it 4-3 in injury-time.

Sergio Aguero had the chance to grab the most incredible of points for the visitors in the final minute, but his header found the side of the net, with Liverpool holding on for a vital win and simultaneously ending Manchester City’s unbeaten Premier League streak.

Unsurprisingly, fans could not quite believe what they had witnessed, with some of the best roundup from across Twitter below:

Not to get too technical here but Liverpool are – as we say in the scientific community – making absolute mince meat out of City.

Liverpool, with a display the Invincibles would have been proud of, both giving Arsenal fans something to smile about and a reminder of how far they’ve fallen since…

City are still a sensational football team – and are only going to get better. But this shows why all that ‘best PL side ever’ stuff was premature.

City almost pull it back with the last kick of the game!

Liverpool wouldn’t have it any other way.
