The 2018 January transfer window closed yesterday with over 1 billion Euros exchanging hands over the course of the month breaking the 2011 record of £225million.

1. Philipe Coutinho to Barca

Philipe Coutinho finally sealed a dream move to Barcelona after a failed attempt in the summer. The Catalan club payed £146m for the midfielder.

The transfer fee made the Brazilian the world’s second most expensive player ever, behind fellow countryman Neymar who moved to PSG in the summer.

2 Virgil van Dijk, Southampton to Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool doled out £75m to poach defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton. The arrival of the Dutch centre-back was expected to boost the defensive strength the 19-time league champions.

The fee paid for Van Dijk made him the most expensive centre-back in the history of football.
